Leave the visit with clear answers

Arrive with a short account of what you want help with. Leave with the plan, the open questions and a way to follow up.

Prepare a short account

Bring your medicine and supplement list, details of past treatment, any test results you have and your unanswered questions. Describe your goal in your own words.

Ask who will review that information and how to send a question before the visit. For an online visit, confirm how the conversation will happen.

Expect a conversation about the plan

Leave room for an answer that changes the plan. Ask about other options, including no new medicine, and what each option would involve.

For the Federation of State Medical Boards, a patient selecting answers on a fixed online form is not enough to decide treatment; its advice was checked September 26, 2026.

If a form changes its questions based on your answers, the group says the doctor must still be able to ask you more questions.

As of September 26, 2026, the state in which you receive care determines a clinic’s online prescribing rules; the group provides advice to medical boards.

A form is not automatically the wrong approach. Ask how your treating professional will ask follow-up questions and how you can raise questions yourself.

The group’s advice, checked September 26, 2026, also says a menu selection alone cannot justify a prescription.

Ask what needs a closer look

Ask what each proposed test would answer and whether its result could change the plan.

The medical boards’ advice requires doctors to arrange any tests or physical exam still needed after an online visit, or refer patients elsewhere for that help.

A quiet covered walkway opening toward a sunlit garden, with no people present.
Ask where any needed in-person exam would happen and who would arrange it.

Agree on the next conversation

Before the visit ends, ask for the plan in writing. Include the product name, the reason it was proposed, any open questions and the follow-up arrangement.

Who answers questions after this visit?

Get a named role and a way to reach the service, including when the person treating you is away.

How will we assess the help this plan provides?

Ask what will be reviewed and what might lead to a different plan.

What would make us stop and reassess?

Ask the person treating you to explain problems to watch for and how to respond.
